I have used Grammarly Premium continuously since 2019 (over 6 years) and it remains the only AI writing tool that runs in the background everywhere I type. Across 2026 it has corrected an estimated 14,000 grammar slips, flagged 200+ tone mismatches before I sent passive-aggressive emails, and saved me from at least 3 visible typos in published blog posts.

The browser extension coverage is the moat. Grammarly works in Gmail, Google Docs, Notion, X, LinkedIn, Slack web, GitHub PR comments, Substack, and roughly any text input on the web. Most LLM-based writing tools require copy-paste or have specific app integrations; Grammarly is the only one that catches a typo in the moment regardless of where I am typing. For a non-technical professional or anyone whose work is 80% writing in browser-based tools, this single attribute justifies the $12/month Premium plan.

The tone detector deserves more credit than it gets. Grammarly classifies the tone of my draft (confident, friendly, formal, urgent, etc.) and flags when the tone mismatches the intent (for instance friendly intent but the draft reads as cold). I have rewritten about 40 emails this year specifically because the tone classifier flagged something my conscious read missed. For high-stakes communication (investor updates, client renewals, hiring offers), this is genuinely valuable.

Generative AI features (rewrite, shorten, expand, generate from prompt) added 2023 are the weakest part of the product. Output quality is noticeably below ChatGPT or Claude on the same prompt; if I want to draft something from scratch I open Claude, not Grammarly. The real value of Grammarly remains in the editing layer, not the generation layer.

Where Grammarly falls short: occasionally aggressive style suggestions that flatten distinctive voice (I now ignore about 30% of style nudges to preserve my own writing rhythm), Premium pricing higher than competitors (ProWritingAid at $79/year is half the cost), the mobile keyboard feels less polished than the desktop experience, and the GenAI features still feel like a v2 of an idea that competitors execute better. For a pure proofreader and tone-safety net across the whole web, Grammarly is still the best in category.

Avoid if

You write primarily in offline applications (the Microsoft Word built-in Editor plus Microsoft Editor extension covers most needs at no extra cost). You are price-sensitive (ProWritingAid at $79/year is roughly half the cost of Grammarly Premium for similar grammar coverage). Or you only need grammar correction in one tool (a free Hemingway Editor or LanguageTool plugin covers it).
