Tested Slack over six weeks across a 50-person remote organization spanning engineering, marketing, sales, and operations. Baseline was Microsoft Teams for the previous corporate setup and Discord for the early-startup phase. AI thread summarization saved my team roughly 90 minutes weekly per leader on catching up to overnight threads - the summaries captured decisions and action items reliably about 80 percent of the time. Channel recaps for engineering and customer-feedback channels delivered scanable morning briefs that replaced manual standup writeups. AI Search across the workspace returned semantically relevant results in milliseconds, finding decisions from six-month-old threads that keyword search would have missed entirely. Huddles for ad-hoc voice are genuinely fast - 2-second connect vs Zoom Room loading. Workflow Builder handled approval flows and new-hire onboarding routing without engineering work.

Slack AI requires the Business+ plan at roughly 15 USD per user monthly on top of base pricing - for a 50-person team that is 9,000 USD annually before any other costs. Microsoft Teams bundles equivalent AI in Microsoft 365 Copilot at lower marginal cost when already licensed. Notification fatigue is real and the granular controls have a learning curve - new hires routinely miss critical pings until they tune settings by week two. Threading discipline still requires team agreements, and Slack alone will not enforce it. Free tier capped at 90 days of message history broke our knowledge-retrieval workflow before we upgraded.

Best for engineering-led and design-led organizations who prioritize developer ergonomics, the app ecosystem, and AI quality over Microsoft ecosystem integration. Microsoft Teams remains the right pick when your stack is already Microsoft 365 or you need bundled video conferencing. Discord fits community-focused or gaming-adjacent teams. Pick Slack when comms culture treats async-first and AI-search matters.
